In the spring of 1976, shooting began on Star Wars, a film described by its writer and director George Lucas as a modernfairytale set "a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away". The film was shot on location in Tunisia and at Elstree Studios in Hertfordshire. Its innovative special effects were created in California by Lucas'snewly-formed company, Industrial Light and Magic.
The Polaroids were used for set designers to maintain continuity, and for other departments for evaluation. Some of these photographs are inscribed with filming notes, such as the interesting ‘Restraining Bolt’caption on C3PO).
These candid Polaroids from the making of Star Wars include scenes that never made the final cut and snapshots of the cast behind the scenes on an immortal sci-fi classic. The shots were owned by crew member Ann Skinner, who was the scriptsupervisor on the production.
