How to Link to an Image Modal in a Post or Page with Shortcode

In a previous FAQ we introduced how to render an image to your website with optional shortcode. The shortcode is optional but highly recommended because of the freedom and global flexibility that the shortcode provides. There are occasions where you simply want to link to an image rather than render it to a page, particularly when there's a large number of images to show (the article on our blog regarding non-compliant Finance Facebook Advertising is a good example). This FAQ will show you how to link to an image modal. Simple.

  The Result

The shortcode of [link url="16368"]click me[/link] returns the following: click me  (the 'click me' text is the anchor text and can obviously be anything). Note that the image icon is applied to the link to identify it as an image link.

  Building the Image Link Shortcode

The shortcode for each image is found in the WordPress media library. Launch the library via the 'Add Media' button, select your image, and copy the shortcode from the bottom right of the screen (labelled 'Modal Link').

Launch the library via the 'Add Media' button, select your image, and copy the shortcode from the bottom right of the screen (labelled 'Modal Link'). Copy the link into your post. Ensure you replace the link anchor text with your own.

By default we'll inherit the title tag from the WordPress Media Library title, although you may define your own by using the attribute of title="My Title" in your shortcode.

This link type is part of a bigger picture linking architecture that gives you complete control over website link features and structure.
