Yabber isn't a CRM, so the status of a Contact with relation to an active Opportunity generally shouldn't be used. Instead, the Contact Status is an indication of the status of a contact in the Marketing and Sales funnel. The status is used for various types of filtering, such as email and SMS lists, and it's heavily utilised for statistical purposes. Generally, the status of a contact may be managed via triggers, so the manual assignment is rarely necessary. This FAQ details how to create a status and how to manually assign a particular status to a contact.

Status Triggers
Status changes are normally actioned via the Triggerly module, so as a user engages in the funnel in a particular way, they'll be assigned a new status. It should be noted that the field is very different to a stage in a workflow, since users in the same stage may have a different status.
For most users, the status is simply a means of further categorising contacts so they may be filtered when sending SMS marketing messages.
